When I was a child I knew no blind adults. Sadly that isn’t an exaggeration. It wasn’t until I was a teenager that I met older blind people and only a very small minority of them were in work. I had no real idea what kind of jobs blind people could do, the few ideas I had were formed from guess work and the secret hopes I had for my future. When I began to make decisions that would have an impact on my future employment prospects I didn’t have anyone I could turn to who had paved the way so to speak.
This is why I have decided to create “working blind”. Every fortnight I will interview a blind person who is in employment, finding out about the job they do, their previous employment and the path they took to get there. My hope is that this will encourage young blind people who are beginning to explore their options and are wondering if there are blind people working in the field they are planning to enter. I also believe it will be a valuable resource for blind people who may want a career change and for parents of blind children who worry about their child’s future.
If you are reading this post and think you have an employment story that you would like to share, all you have to do is fill in this form and I will contact you to arrange an interview. You may think your story is ordinary, but for a blind person who doesn’t know what their future may hold it could be life changing.
