There are no words which can adequately describe how much I loved this middle-grade fantasy and first book in what looks to be a fun and charming series.
The story starts as 12-year-old Kat, dressed as a boy, is trying to sneak out of her house to run off to London. She is scared that her eldest sister will be forced to marry in order to rescue the family from the debt their brother has landed them in, and so she is determined to save them instead. Her plans end in chaos. Instead of going to London, she discovers her magical legacy, and so begins her own journey learning how to harness the power she seems to have inherited. If she can learn about magic, perhaps she can save her sister from having to marry an awful man who possibly murdered his first wife.
Kat is a hilarious narrator. I love her observations and comments. She has an extremely entertaining outlook on the world around her. I also love her relationship with her older sisters. They argue, get frustrated with one another, but more than anything they love each other. I really appreciated their strong family bond. Her sisters are both ridiculous and entertaining in their own way. Whether that’s trying to use magic to ensnare a love match, or being seemingly perfect and reasonable in the face of a family on the brink, they added so much to the story.
This book is set in regency England and it has all the fashionable parties and social expectations that go along with that. But as Kat would tell you, even fashionable people can be witches. This first book in the series has it all: fashionable and disastrous parties, a highwayman lurking in the shadows and causing chaos, a potentially murderous member of nobility, and a dreadful stepmother.
As noted above, this book is middle-grade fantasy so would be suitable for younger readers. I’m sure they will love it. Click one of the links below to buy this book. These are affiliate links.
