This summer I got to go to ICC for the first time. ICC is the international camp on communication and computers and it’s something I’ve wanted to attend for a few years. It’s held in a different country each summer and is attended by blind students primarily from Europe. This summer it was held in the Czech Republic and there were participants from over 15 different countries, including 10 of us from the UK.
I had no idea what to expect when I arrived, a few of my friends had been before and I’d heard only positive things about it so I was really looking forward to going. It honestly exceeded all of my expectations, the workshops were really great, I was so lucky to get all of the ones I signed up for and I met some amazing people. I took workshops in studying abroad, travel ideas, sound editing, goalball and cooking to name a few. ICC stood out for me because it wasn’t a “typical” blind event. We were left to get on with whatever we wanted rather than being controlled all the time and the expectations the workshop leaders had of us were high. I would definitely recommend it to any VI student, especially if you are considering going to or are already at university. It was such a good experience and I’d love to get the chance to go again.
